Subject: Audio failure after BIOS update on Dell Vostro 3400 – Request for previous BIOS version or recovery instructions

Dear Dell Support Team,

I am reaching out to request technical assistance regarding a persistent issue affecting the functionality of my Dell Vostro 3400.

Approximately one year ago, the system was affected by an automatic BIOS update triggered by third-party software (Avast Driver Updater). Following that update, the built-in speakers and microphone began to malfunction. Initially, the audio worked intermittently — sometimes functioning for a few minutes or during short sessions — but for the past three months, there has been no audio functionality at all, and the system fails to detect any input or output audio devices.

I have taken the following steps in an attempt to resolve the issue, without success:

  • Performed a clean reinstall of Windows 11 (factory reset).

  • Updated the BIOS to the latest critical version available (v1.38.0 dated June 18, 2025).

  • Restored BIOS settings to “Factory Defaults.”

  • Reinstalled the official Dell drivers for audio, chipset, and Bluetooth.

Despite these efforts, neither the built-in audio devices nor Bluetooth audio are working properly, and basic sound functionality cannot be restored.

I understand that my device is currently out of warranty, but the issue was clearly caused by an unsolicited BIOS update performed by Avast, which altered the system firmware.

Given that the problem began specifically after the BIOS was modified, and that earlier BIOS versions are no longer available on the official Dell support site, I kindly request your assistance with the following:

  1. Access to a previous, stable BIOS version (possibly prior to v1.36.0), matching the original factory configuration of the system.

  2. If a BIOS downgrade via Windows is not possible, guidance on how to perform a forced BIOS recovery via USB on this model.

  3. Clarification on whether this issue is known to Dell, and if there are any additional measures or support available to restore audio functionality.

I appreciate your time and support. I am willing to follow any technical instructions you may provide.

Looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

Thanks so much for providing the previous BIOS versions.

Unfortunately, my audio issue started right around the release of version 1.30.0, so it’s very likely that the root cause is related to that update.

Would it be possible to get access to BIOS version 1.29.0 or any earlier version? I’m specifically looking to test the last known stable firmware version prior to when the problem began.

I understand the risks of downgrading and will follow all necessary precautions.

Thank you again for your help and support.

Thank you all for your kind support and suggestions.

I was able to successfully downgrade the BIOS to version 1.26, following your guidance. Unfortunately, the issue persists: my Dell Vostro 3400 laptop still does not detect the built-in speakers or microphone.

This problem originally started after an unsolicited BIOS update was pushed through Avast Driver Updater, and despite multiple attempts — including BIOS rollback, factory resets, and driver reinstalls — the audio subsystem remains non-functional.

I truly appreciate the time and help you’ve given me throughout this process. Your responses were extremely valuable.

Best regards,
Felipe

Hi

My only other, sensible, suggestion is that MS has a security policy blocking the audio system.

Where it says Camera, think AUDIO......

To get your camera working when Windows blocks it on security grounds, follow these expert steps:

  1. Enable Camera Access in Privacy Settings
Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera. Make sure Camera access for this device is turned On. Also, enable Allow apps to access your camera and Allow desktop apps to access your camera to ensure applications can use the camera.

  2. Close Conflicting Apps
Check if another app is using the camera, blocking access. Close all apps that might be accessing the camera. Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to end any camera-using processes.

  3. Update or Reinstall Camera Drivers
Open Device Manager, expand Cameras, right-click your camera, and select Update driver or uninstall and then restart your PC to reinstall drivers automatically. You can also check your computer manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers.

  4. Check Antivirus or Firewall Settings
Some security software may block camera access. Temporarily disable antivirus/firewall or add an exception to allow camera use.

This is a little left field, I think that is the correct expression, but is still valid...

A LO-Cost/NO-Cost alternative....

Make a bootable USB and test your AUDIO with a NON MS OS, which will place the problem with either the device or windows.

It is LIVE and does not install, unless you initiate it, and is a fully fledged OS.

If in doubt please ask.

Hi, thank you again for your help.

I followed all of your suggestions carefully, including booting into Linux Mint from a USB drive to test the audio outside of Windows.

Unfortunately, even in Linux, the system does not detect the internal speakers or microphone. This strongly suggests that the internal audio chip is either permanently disabled or physically damaged — most likely due to the unsolicited BIOS update triggered by Avast Driver Updater over a year ago.

At this point, I've also tried:

  • Reinstalling Windows from scratch

  • Downgrading the BIOS all the way back to version 1.26

  • Resetting BIOS settings to factory defaults

  • Testing various Bluetooth and USB audio alternatives

Some Bluetooth earbuds work fine (Realme Buds Air 6 Pro), but built-in audio remains completely non-functional in any environment.

Thanks again for your support and time — I appreciate all the suggestions you’ve shared.

Best regards,
Felipe
