Intel centrino advanced-n 6200 wifi card not working with Vostro 2420

Vostro 2420

Vostro 2420

I wanted to get my Vostro 2420 on 5GHz networks, so I removed the original wifi card from my Vostro and installed the Intel n 6200.  (The Intel card came from an HP laptop running Windows 10 and worked fine on that system.)  The card shows up in the Vostro's device manager, but it's offline.  It says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)."  It says the driver is up to date.  I tried reinstalling it, but no luck.  Is this card compatible with a Vostro 2420?

That error code often means incompatible drivers.

I suggest that you use Device Manager to uninstall the driver. Then reboot and let Windows choose an appropriate drive. You might have to run Windows Update.

In Windows 10, even with older network cards I've found that Windows Update generally installs compatible drivers automatically.

Thanks.  I tried your suggestion and now I'm getting.....

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)    Object Name not found."

In Device Manager, select that network adapter to uninstall it, also selecting the checkbox to "Delete the driver software for this device".

Then reboot and let Windows choose an appropriate driver.

What OS are you running in your Vostro? If it's an older OS, it might not include an appropriate driver for that card. It might be worth performing a clean install of Windows 10.

Is the card correctly identified in Device Manager?

If nothing above works, you could try to install this driver from Dell that was for that particular wifi card in an XPS system: Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300/Advanced-N 6200,N 6230/Wireless-N 1000,N 1030 Driver | Driver Details | Dell US

Just musing out loud here: you said that you took that card from an HP laptop. An HP computer's BIOS includes a whitelists of allowed wifi cards. If you install a card that isn't on the whitelist, it won't work. I haven't heard of there being anything customized on the wifi card that would cause it to work in an HP system and not in a non-HP system, but who knows. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

Running Windows 10 on my Dell laptop.  Card is correctly identified in Device Manager.  Tried deleting everything and rebooting.  After it reboots, it tells me I have the latest driver.  Yet, it still doesn't work.  I need my laptop for work, so I threw in the towel and swapped the cards back out with the HP.  The HP running Windows 10 is happy again with that card, so go figure.  I just ordered a 5GHz USB wi-fi dongle from Amazon for my Dell.  "Know when to hold them and when to fold them."
