Dell Vostro 5568 SSD capacity

I need to replace the M.2 SSD in my laptop as it says it is beginning to fail, the manual says that this slot supports up to 256GB. Can I fit a 1TB replacement? Were these specifications for what was fitted at the time?

This laptop had M.2 256GB fitted from new.

256GB is the largest drive that Dell tested with the 5568 but NOT the largest that is compatible. As shown at the Crucial site here, you can install up to and including a 4TB SSD. But you don't have to install a Crucial drive as any quality drive will work.

Just be sure you're aware that the only M.2 drive this system supports is SATA -- it will not take an M.2 NVMe/PCIe drive.

@JOcean thanks for this. I had seen some of your responses to other queries, thanks for your help.

@ejn63 thanks very much.  I’ve noticed the SATA vs NVMe difference.

ive been looking at the Western Digital Blue M.2 ssd, but note that they have two versions, one called a SA510. I can’t see the difference between this and their SATA ssd, other than the price.

The SA510 comes in both 2.5' and M.2 SATA formats -- check carefully before buying depending on which you want.

@JOcean I looked at the Crucial link from one of your other posts, which was most helpful.

It doesn’t appear to have M.2 cards listed now, only the 2.5 versions for some reason. I wonder if they are out of stock? I’m sure there was an option a few days ago, but could be mistaken.

I used this link from one of your other posts to research and order the RAM, since my existing one bank of RAM is Micron, I wanted to double the RAM, and for them to be the same make.

I don't think Crucial has produced M.2 SATA drives in a while -- if you find any they're likely older models.

Samsung and WD definitely still produce M.2 SATA drives.

@Landyrew Keep in mind that M.2 SATA and 2.5" SATA drives all have the same performance in speed. @ejn63 comment is spot on about WD and Samsung.

Thanks both for your support. I checked with Sandisk and either of the Western Digital Blue M.2 cards are okay, they are both SATA. don’t know why they do 2 versions but one is cheaper than the other.
