Dell Vostro 14-3468 (i7-7500U) Overheating, Loud Fan Noise, and Severe Slowdowns

I have a Dell Vostro 14-3468 laptop with an Intel Core i7-7500U Processor. The laptop's fan makes a lot of noise and the system often becomes slow while browsing. Sometimes it freezes completely, and other times it becomes choppy and laggy.

I have already upgraded it with a proper SSD and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM (8 GB in each slot). I have also had the laptop serviced twice, but the problem still exists. I removed the built-in keyboard and now use an external keyboard. I also place two homemade external fans underneath the laptop, along with a bowl of ice cubes to help keep it cool. As long as the ice cubes are still frozen, the laptop runs normally and does not slow down. However, once the ice melts, the laptop becomes very hot again and starts slowing down.

What could be causing this issue with my laptop?

Hey @intersoldi,

Sorry to hear about your issue. Overheating problems can be a challenge sometimes to isolate, but I’ll do my best to help find a solution for you. Before I start offering suggestions, I just need some quick info.

A few questions:

  • When you serviced your system, were any parts replaced?
  • Did they clean the fans?

If you haven’t done so already, I would recommend running diagnostics. On startup, repeatedly tap the F12 key, then use the arrow keys to select Diagnostics. If any error codes are reported, please capture that information — the code should start with 2000-.

Once the test is complete, I would also recommend leaving it on that screen for a bit to see if the overheating issue occurs outside of the operating system (OS). That will be important in determining whether we’re dealing with a software or hardware issue.
