CMOS Battery Replacement ?
Vostro 3560
I have Merlo's symptoms (on his Vostro 3560). I'm running Win10 x64 Pro. Is it possible that I just need a new cmos battery on this 14-year-old laptop ?

If it's the five-beep sequence, it could be. If it's some other beep sequence, it's not (just) the CMOS battery.

Given the age a CMOS problem is likely but at 14 years old there may be a need for new fans and a good cleaning etc

Thankyou both for replying. Actually no sequence to it, ie beep code. Just a short continuous beeping with about 1 second in between. Requires a hard shutdown. Every 5-7 times it boots up. About a week ago I got the "Press F1" requirement which I did. I reseated the ram (6 Gbs) and set the (legacy) BIOS back to "Optimal"; neither had any effect.
Looks like replacing the CMOS battery is the first step and hope that that's the cure. Can't risk re-flashing BIOS like Merlo did. Thanks for the clarifications.

I replaced the battery with a new one. The result was the 5-beep special, followed by a hard shutdown. Try again I got my original beeps. Will try to reflash most current BIOS (A20) if I can get it to POST; not expecting much positive. Not advanced enough to split files if that's what they're doing in the 'badcaps' thread. Since Merlo's symptoms were exactly the same as mine on the same model laptop I didn't think it would be a straight-out battery issue. Will 'post' back if anything positive happens. Ciao, thanks.

If the reflash does not work it suggests the machine is toast

One more question on this if you can:
After replacing CMOS battery I was unable to get back in so toast it is. I'm currently using an Asus tower (M11BB). My question is can I pull the Vostro HDD (7200) and install it in a desktop or do I have to get a laptop to put it in ? And are there any restrictions on that purchase so that it can run the Vostro HDD ? I'm not technically savy so please keep that in mind with any possible solutions. Thankyou, Bill

Use a SATA SSD in the old vostro and see if you can installed Windows.
Rufus can fix Windows 11 to run on old dinosaurs

My issue is not with the OS or the hard drive. It's an apparent scrambled BIOS caused by unknown that can't be fixed without a technician/programmer. Thankyou for your input.

Try a fresh BIOS flash and reset to defaults
