BitLocker Recovery Password

Inspiron 5515

Inspiron 5515

I have read this thread...

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000202640/windows-update-kb5012170-may-ask-for-a-bitlocker-recovery-password

But my recovery key for that laptop is NOT on my MS account.

I have 4 desktops and 3 laptops.

Need a solution.

If I may jump in, you can download the media creation tool from MS here assuming you have Windows 10 or from here if Windows 11. With that tool you can create a Windows  bootable installation flash drive . And with that you can install the OS. This YouTube video will detail the procedure of a clean install. The procedure for Windows 10 and 11 is the same.

Unless you've made a backup to somewhere you can access, the data on the drives is gone forever.

There is no way to recover a drive that's been encrypted with bitlocker if you've no copy of the key.

I gave the laptop to my son. I pulled up my MS account and there are only 2 keys there and I have 6 PCs. Total BS if you ask me. Now I have a $500 dell boat anchor.

The hardware is fine -- you simply will need to reload the operating system from bare metal.

Bitlocker absolutely must be used with a verified backup of the encryption key -- if that is lost, so is the data on the drive.

Where does on get the operating system? And how does one reload on a system that is stuck there?

Thanks, I'll pass it on to my son.
