Vostro 460, 2 beep memory error, works in different building

Hello,

We have 6 Vostro 460 PC in a student lab, one of them has the 2 beep memory code and won't do anything, I reseated the memory but no joy. So I took it home to do more troubleshooting on it, but it booted fine. Not sure why so I took it back. Again it wouldn't boot and had 2 beeps. I used a new power cord and went to another part of the school, same issue.  Took it home again and it works fine.  I'm really stumped on this, I'm thinking there might be a power issue at the school, it's a very old building, but the other computers work fine.  Has anybody had this kind of issue?   I'm wondering if the power supply is on the edge and something with the A/C power at the school is not clean or up to spec, and the power supply is not working with the A/C issue.

I may just try a new power supply unless somebody has ran into this before.

Thanks,

F1JD

It sure sounds like a power issue. If it works fine at home but not at school, there is little else to assume. But have you tried to swap power supplies with a working system? Also swap the memory from another system and try that. It sounds like the PSU is on the edge supplying borderline power requirements when on a low AC input. The point is that all things being equal, if the system works fine at home, the only thing you did was to remove the system to a different environment with possibly a cleaner AC line or a stronger AC line. Have you measured the voltage at a wall receptacle yet? It is also very possible that the PSU is showing early signs of failure.

Thanks for the reply, I don't visit the school too often, but I'm going to take my meter there this week, and if the class is not working on the systems I'll try the swap. Luckily the PSU in that unit is pretty generic unlike some Dell PSU's so I think I have a working PSU I may swap out before going back.  I'll update later this week.

Thanks again.

Sorry it's been a while, it finally died here at my place, it ended up just pulsating the fans for the CPU and case, and having a solid amber power button.  It ended up being a motherboard, I replaced it and it's up and running. It was just playing with me.....

Thanks for the input!
