Vostro 430 MT, memory upgrade

Hi,

I'm having for a long time a Vostro 430 MT and very happy with it. Though I'd like to upgrade the ram in order to have better performance.

I found in this thread with the following information:

If I understand it well, it would not be possible to have a configuration with 12GB (2x2GB + 2x4GB)? Or is it possible? In any case, which brand is the best to buy for this PC? I read a lot of different type of info about it that are contradictory.

Thx for your answers.

edou,

Below are the memory configurations and specs for the Vostro 430. As far as the best memory. There are many. Kingston is a good brand. Go to crucial.com. They usually have good memory selections.

Dell - Vostro 430 -System Specification

Memory

Type DDR3 SDRAM (non–ECC memory only)
Speed 1066MHz, 1333MHz
Memory connectors Four
Memory capacities 1 GB, 2 GB and 4GB
Minimum memory 1GB
Maximum memory 16 GB

The Vostro 430 uses DDR3 SDRAM Technology. DDR3 SDRAM is a random access memory interface technology used for high bandwidth storage of the working data of a computer or other digital electronic devices.

  • DDR3 SDRAM is an improvement over its predecessor DDR2 SDRAM
  • Capable to transfer twice the data rate of DDR2 (I/O at 8x the data rate of the memory cells it contains)
  • Enabling higher bus rates and higher peak rates than earlier memory technologies
  • No corresponding reduction in latency, due to feature of the DRAM array
  • DDR3 standard allows for chip capacities of 512 Megabits to 8 Gigabits, enabling a maximum memory module size of 16 gigabytes

Supported Memory Configurations

Capacity Configuration
1GB 1x1GB
2GB 2x1GB 1x2GB
3GB (1x1GB)+ (1x2GB)
4GB 4x1GB 2x2GB 1x4GB
6GB 3x2GB (1x4GB)+ (2x1GB) (1x4GB)+(1x2GB)
8GB 4x2GB 2x4GB
16GB 4x4GB

Memory-Banks operate semi-independently. If there are two Memory-Banks (comprised of with 2 slots each), conceivably they could be populated with different DIMM sizes, as long as they are a matched pair. But ALL the installed memory must match in other regards (like speed etc.).

IIRC, some of these old machines (XP and Vista 32bit days) came from Dell with really strange configs. My notes say I got a Vostro-410 in-trade once with 512mb+512mb+1gb+1gb=3gb .

My GUESS is it would work (but it's not ideal ... too many possible mis-steps possible). Manuals can't show all the possible configs.

EDIT:
Also, if this machine is not a quad-core, I would not bother with it now-days.

You cant mix ranks and speed and density.

Its not recommended that you mix vendors.
