vostro 430 and GTX 1060 or 1070 upgrade

My Vostro 430 has a minimum 500 W power supply.

I am considering to add GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 (Ti) to the system.

I wonder if I can use such graphics card to Vostro 430.

Does the motherboard support GDDR5 ?

Thank you

1. I'm thinking stock is 350w PS.

2. Even a 500w would only safely run a GTX-1060 at max

3. There simply isn't much room due to drive cage

4. Irrelevant. That's for the video card only.

This is an old machine. Are you sure you want to put this kind of time, money, and effort into it?

Even if it was already a quad-core, with a good-amount of memory ... the lack of faster SATA-3/600 (for your SSD) will hold you back. You will also need a PCIe-AddIn card for USB-3.0.

Thank you for the reply.

1. Correct, I changed the original power supply with a new one, as I am using GTX 760 now.

2. Ok, after checking inside, the PSU is 630 -- maybe it is barely enough for the whole system.

3. For the tolerance with the drive cage, it looks like the card with dimension like GTX 760 can fit but very tight.

4. I check GTX 1070 running with GDDR5 so if it is not affecting then that's great.

I hope I can upgrade the whole system but at moment this is my option.

If that TT-630w has proper PCIe Power-Cables (and sufficient amps on 12volt rail) then you should be OK (barely). Keep in mind it's really not a good idea to run your PS at 90-100% utilization.

See gpuboss.com . GTX-1070 or GTX-1070-TI is lowest card I would recommend since it appears you are trying to make this a "gaming box". At least that card would be worth moving to a new custom-build in a year or so.

I just don't see putting $400-$500 into a machine this old (with it's other lacking motherboard-tech, components, and bottle-necks). It helps when all parts are a closer vintage.

It's not even a Vostro-460. Personally, I think Vostro-460 is only good-enough for Kodi (and mid-level Windows Direct-X 3D-gaming). I could have taken it a bit higher, but I don't think even it would make a good "main gaming-rig" (not in 2018 anyway).
