Vostro 3910 PSU Upgrade
Hi - I bought 2 Vostro 3910 for my grandkids. I also bought 2 GTX 1060 graphics cards so they could play the latest games. The problem was the psu was undersized so I looked on the chats of this community and saw where someone said I could use a 500w psu made for the Dell and would fit this board. TPX56. They fit right in and had the pcie connector for the card. The issue is that the fans of the card run even when the computer is turned off. I’ve all of the things I’ve seen on YouTube about editing power plan but nothing has worked. I’ve updated the bios on them and this still hasn’t worked. I ended up opening each computer and disconnecting the cpu and motherboard cable and the fan is still running. Does anyone know what the issue could be? I could understand 1 psu being bad but not 2.
Thank you
Ken

I agree. there is leakage of psu 5VSB into the gpu when psu is off.

what if you connect the PC to a power strip and not directly in the wall outlet. when PC is turned off, also turn off power of the power strip. this should cut off all power to the pc including that to gpu fan. try this as a test.
the issue of fan still turning could be a standby power still on when pc is off. the fan may keep turn when there is 5VSB. gpu cooling fans run on 5V

It was connected to a power strip. What I'm saying is shouldn't the motherboard control the power of the psu? I disconnected the cpu power and the power to the motherboard from the psu then plugged the the psu in to the strip. The psu was still supplying power to the pcie cable (6+2). It shouldn't do that should it?

I should also note that I have left the computer unplugged all night and when I plugged it in the fan started moving again.

there is also power in the PCIex16 slot which should die when PC is shut down

that is evidence there is standby power to the gpu fan when pc is down but plugged in power. not normal but can be stopped by switching off power strip

I don't understand the difference between unplugging from the wall and plugging into a power strip and turning off the power strip.

On your second post the pc was unplugged from power night long then when power was restored in the morning the gpu fans came back on. Additionally as I mentioned in the original post, I opened up the case, unplugged psu from the motherboard and cpu but left the pcie attached to the gpu. I then plugged the psu to power and the gpu fans came on. Doesn't that show a fault to the psu?
