Vostro 3667/3668, HDD replacement without losing data

Hello,

I audited a desktop Vostro 3668 of a friend of mine, he was complaining applications would take a long time to launch; I indeed confirmed that visually and by looking at the performance tools provided by Windows ( the disk usage was stuck at 100% most of the time).
While I was able to reduce the load by removing some useless applications launched automatically, I did not find a root cause, so the problem is still present. I decided to replace the disk with a SSD which would be more faster than trying to investigate this problem any further.

Do you have any suggestion for upgrade kit, I came across this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CFXT6FZ does someone know if it good or is there other?

I would like for the upgrade to be able to copy the whole disk content (OS + data) as identical on the new one for few reasons:

  • The PC has specific applications (accounting, ...) that I don't know if my friend has all necessary information to reinstall it the same way
  • I would like to avoid the end-user effect, that would oblige to provide support for any thing that is different between the two installations and would disturb the person who use the PC.
  • This is faster

I'm not at all a Windows + its eco-system expert I work only with Linux.

The PC is not more under warranty.

Thanks for your help.

That Kingston SSD will work.  I have no experience with Kingston as I only use Samsung SSD's.  You will likely need an adapter to securely mount the SSD in a hard drive slot.

There are two methods to create the system image on the SSD.  "Disc Image" or "Clone".  Either way all disc partitions need copied.

Disc image method is best as it only copies the actual data.  A clone copies everything on the hard drive including bad data, bad disc sectors, open disc sectors.

The disc image method requires a program such as the free Macrium Reflect to do the disc image (Macrium Reflect will also do clone).  To do the disc image a separate drive is needed, image the entire drive, all partitions, to the separate drive.  Then "restore" the created disc image to the new SSD.
