Dell Vostro 270, Regulatory Model D11M, Regulatory Type D11M002
This is a 2012 model so it may or May not have Windows 8 and UEFI.
You have to use a Host Bus Adapter. This is why WDC had an OEM Rocket 620 bundled with 3TB drives. You will have to use Diskpart to format the Drive with WINDOWS PE and then install. The INTEL RST built into windows Does not support larger than 2TB drives aka Advanced Format. This means that AHCI and F6 drivers ARE REQUIRED to "see" the hard drive to install onto.

Ok, is that the same for a Vostro 260s? That is what I currently have. I didn’t think it was possible, but maybe you know better than I do? I will be running Windows 7 or 10 but possibly 8.1.
Thank you for your very informative reply!

The rocket host bus adapter works with 64 bit windows 7 or 8 or 10 just fine.
These controllers do not work in Secure Boot mode however. So if your bios has that you will need to turn that off and enable legacy option roms.

Is that the same for the 260 and 270? If I can’t get hold of a highpoint will something like the Syba SI-PEX40064 work? I’m actually thinking of getting it and if it doesn’t do what I want return it. Thanks again for your help speedstep.

Syba SI-PEX40064 cards tend to NOT WORK AT ALL because they are PCI-E 2.0 or even 1.1 based. ANY storage card that is not from dell and does not have certificate in BIOS blessed by microsoft WILL NOT WORK with Secure Boot On.
