Vostro 260, no signal with a MSI R7 370

Hey there!

I hope someone can give me a helping hand. I just bought a DELL Vostro 260 on ebay and it works pretty well. The only thing is: I can not run it with my former MSI R7 370 4G and I don t know why.

Once I attached to the mainboard there is no signal going to the screen.

My first intention was that the card was broken, but it works perfect with my wifes PC (AMD A10 7850k).

Then I thought the power supply is the reason (DELL Vostro has a 300W power supply), so I took the one of my former PC (450W) that ran with the MSI Graphic Card. No success. Still "No Signal".

Next I updated the BIOS to A10 (the latest version that is available for the Vostro 260). No success.

My last thing I thought that because of the fact that the MSI R370 4G is a PCIe 3.0 graphic card and the Vostro has a PCIe 2.x Slot that this might be a reason, but other forums say that downgrading is no problem (except the minor loss of data speed).

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Really appriciated! And merry xmas days (by the way!9

Best,

Chris

Hi JOcean,

thx for the reply. Yes, I checked that the 6pin power is plugged in (that s not offensive... ;) ) Thing is there is no option in the BIOS where I can disable or enable any kind of graphics devices.

When I attach the MSI but use the onboard VGA the screen stays black. Once I detach the MSI the system runs normally.

You are right about the PCIe slot. Besides the PCIe cards are backward compatible. Have you checked the BIOS to see if the MSI card is detected? And not trying to be offensive, but did you remember to plug in the 6 pin power plug to the GPU? Also check the BIOS to make sure that the onboard GPU disables when a PCIe card is installed. Just out of curiosity did you try and connect to the onboard GPU connector when the MSI card is installed? You should have no video if the onboard was disabled automatically. And the R7 370 does need the larger PSU. One other thought. Have you removed the CMOS battery (coin cell) from the motherboard and left it out for at least 15 minutes then reinserted the battery or better yet replaced the battery? It may be that the BIOS needs to be reset in order to detect the PCIe card.

The fact that the onboard video goes out at least seems to indicate that the MSI card is being detected and shutting down the onboard. Have you tried any other PCIe video card you might have just to confirm that it is not the MSI card specifically?

Your system INSPIRON 620 / VOSTRO 260 does not have UEFI windows 8 / 10 bios and therefore will NEVER WORK EVER with an R series Card.  Older Radeon HD 2400 3400 4600 6600 7750 cards would work fine but NONE I repeat NONE of the R series is going to work.  The OLD BIOS requires DOS VESA Mode 103 which UEFI cards DO NOT HAVE.  Only the Mini Tower can use newer NVIDIA cards up to GT1060.  With no power supply update you are limited to GT 1030 GDDR5

Hi Speedstep!

Thank you for this feedback. So can you give me a recommendation what to do? I mean, I have a Vostro 260 Mini Tower System:1.jpg

But I assume you mean something else...because this PC has no option at all to get into graphic adjustments.

Could a change of the mainboard give a solution? This i5 has (as all i5) a Soket 1155. So a newer Mainboard could solve the problem right?

Dell does not document the panel connections and SOCKET H is from 2010.

There are no LGA1155 motherboards so the only option is to use an NVIDIA based card.
