Upgrade Graphics Card? Vostro Desktop 3681

I recently bought a Vostro Desktop 3681 (i5-10400 processor, 24GB of ram (I upgraded), small casing, etc). I expected it to be lighting fast for regular work, internet browsing, and light gaming (minecraft for my daughter), but it is only working at an average speed. I thought that an upgrade to the graphic card might help; it came with a Intel UHD Graphics 630, which seems pretty bad. I looked at new graphics cards under $100 and found the GeForce GT 1030. I called Dell to see if it would fit, and they said it would but that the motherboard is for GDDR4 and this card if a GDDR5 and therefore it wouldn't improve performance. Is this correct? If so, should I even bother with a new graphics card at the price I'm looking at. Finally, does it matter if the graphic card has a fan or heatsink?

Thank you so much (I was passed around by 6 people when I called Dell and I still don't think they understood what I was asking).

Minecraft minimum system requirement is

  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 series | NVIDIA GeForce 400 Series or AMD Radeon HD 7000 series.

recommended system is

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 700 Series | AMD Radeon Rx 200 Series

what Dell support told you makes no sense.  The discrete video card in Vostro 3671 spec is gt730, gddr5. https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/vostro-3681-desktop/vos_3681_setup_specs/video?guid=guid-03ae7f9d-e4e2-4b18-ace2-3ec06be881e1&lang=en-us

gt1030 gddr5 is ok and 170% faster than UHD630.  A cheaper old gt730 would be adequate for Minecraft (it is entry level geforce 700 series).  gt730 is about same speed as UHD630.  A low power video card may not need a fan.  Your psu is only 200W so it can only support a very low power video card with a passive heatsink (no fan).

on line psu calculator for i5-10400, gt1030, 8gb, 19” led is 220W.  It is in the ballpark of 200W. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

No they r talking trash u can use the gt 1030 gddr5 model I have an older model of ur pc and even that supports it don't buy the gt 1030 gddr4  those people who talk to u don't have much knowledge about stuff and they often get confused between ram and vram cuz ram support is only ddr4

Hi, would GT 1030 card work well with Intel Core i3-10100 3.6ghz?

I have 8gb ram but can upgrade if needed. Is corsair vergence memory any good?

Thanks

Dell makes a 40W GT730 for this model.

Thanks for your advice. I was considering 730 one but 1030 is quite better costing  only £20 extra. And it is 30W as well.

Why would I choose 730 over 1030? Thanks

Hi redxps, I got the same Vostro 3681(16gb ram upgraded) and actually with a Nvidia Quadro p600. I´m not quite a gamer I work with graphics & multimedia but I need more of this pc, sometimes it just can´t handle all the task I need at the same time. Despite I also game in this pc I want to know wich graphic card should be THE BEST for the price, for the space(this case is very tiny) and especially for the energy the psu can handle.

I would really appreciate a good recommendation.

it is not clear to me what you need is a faster graphics card.  For your application you probably need more core in cpu and more ram to deal with content rendering and multitasking.  If you have i5-10400 (6c/12t) consider upgrade cpu to i7-10700(F) which has 8c/16t.  Upgrade ram to 32 or 64 gb.
if you still want a faster gpu even though you are not quite a gamer, given stock psu is only 200w, options are quite limited.  Quadro P600 is on par with gt1030.  There is no point to get a gt1030 in this regard.  I would consider upgrade psu to 360w (6 pin + 2x4 pin) for optiplex 7080 or XPS 8940, which opens up gpu options to include 1050/1650.  For casual gamer those cards are more than good enough.

3681 chassis accommodates low profile single slot width video card only.  This is another serious limitation.  quite difficult if not impossible to find a good gaming card that satisfies both requirements.

Thanks redxps630. optiplex 360w is an external psu? I´m also thinking about getting more RAM, but the graphic card is really important also for what I do. I would really aprecciate any other recommendation.
