My backup HDD is non-detectable
I've been using my old ST500DM002 as a backup drive. It started making a crackling noise, and didn't show up on the drive list. I rebooted without luck, then powered down and started it up again.
The bootup insisted on disk-checking the backup drive, and it was temporarily available again.
Now the drive is completely inaccessible. I put it back in its old tower, tried booting it up, but it's undetectable on that as well.
Any suggestions?

Replace the drive. Any unusual noises from a mechanical drive are never good. You can run diagnostics which will test the drive (tap F12 immediately at boot) but I would bet you will either get a failed drive error or the drive will not be detected which would confirm what you have already seen.
This web page has a list of failure symptoms. Note the drive powers up but is not recognized by the system.
