Graphic Card for Vostro 3681
I purchased a Vostro 3681 a few months ago. I wanted to add a 4GB graphics card. Dell tells me this machine will only support a 2GB graphics card. Can anyone tell me what the limitation is on the 3681 that only allows a 2GB card? I suspect it's the power supply but am not sure. If it is the power supply then it's a simple matter of upgrading it. But I want to be sure before spending the money. Exactly what limits a Vostro 3681 to a 2GB graphics card? Thanks.

Dell support tells you incorrect info. It can certainly support 4GB or higher vram gpu.
for example user validated GTX 1660ti 6 Gb in 3681
RX550 4 gb in 3681
upgrade psu to higher power 360/460/500w Dell psu is simple.

There is a case physical limitation. The case form factor is DT (desktop). Only some low profile card may fit. The PCIex16 slot is right next to the psu. Looks like a double slot width video card will have trouble

I suspected as much. When I asked them why I couldn't install anything higher than a 2GB GPU they would tell me it was a system limitation. When I asked what specifically was the limitation they would simply say it was a design limitation. Something didn't smell right about that answer but I suspected it was simply a matter of upgrading the PSU to accomodate a larger memory GPU.

Hi Redxps630.
Do you mind share with me a link for the power supply? I am looking for one everywhere but can not find it for sure. There are few on Ebay and Ali Express but not sure if it will fit on Vostro 3681. Thank you

Vostro 3681 motherboard has two white 4 pin cpu socket and one proprietary 6 pin socket, which is also used in XPS 8940, Optiplex 7080/7090. The 500w psu for the latter models will be compatible with Vostro 3681.
when shop for Dell oem psu on eBay, make sure you have seller send you exact factory label on psu and picture of connectors. Aliexpress seller may include generic picture of dell psu not necessarily the one they would ship so caveat emptor.
XPS 8940 PSU =

@redxps630 I apologize for annoying you with a 2 year old comment mate, but I would just like to ask these few questions if you wouldn't mind, what you're basically saying is that if I change the case and the psu I could use any gpu? And if so, does dell use proprietary cables for the psu so that I wouldn't be able to just buy any psu I want? Sorry again for asking after such a long time and I apologize if I had any grammatical errors

Re: if I change the case and the psu I could use any gpu?
yes. and if you do not change case but install psu outside case, you can use dual slot width gpu. if you do not mind having side panel open and gpu standing outside case, you can use full height gpu too.
Re: does dell use proprietary cables for the psu so that I wouldn't be able to just buy any psu I want
not any psu, you can use either Dell high power proprietary psu, or use standard ATX 24/4/4 psu with a 24 to 6 pin adapter for Dell 3681.
