We have a VNX5200 in our environment. we added 21*900GB SAS drives which are unbound and want to add them to our existing 2 storage pools. There are no hot spares configured so far. How many drives should be left free and will there be any impact on performance after adding these drives to these 2 pools.
pools are configrued with RAID 5(4+1) configuration.

In addition to what Dynamox has posted, there can be impact when expanding pools.
After the drives are added, a rebalance of the pool will be triggered. This is the same type of process that runs when Fast VP does a tier/data relocation nightly or on schedule.
While the impact may not be big, if a lot of data is relocated, it me be prudent to do it out of peak.
I've blogged about the process if you want the full details.

hot spare consideration on VNX2
EMC VNX – MCx Hot Sparing Considerations | David Ring
as far as pool expansion is concerned you always want to expand in the same drive increment as originally created (best practice for raid-5 is 5 drive increment). You new drives are the same capacity as the ones currently in the pool ?

Yes, they are of same capacity 900GB SAS drives.
Total number of disks on array are 75.
The 2 existing pools have 25 drives each, and we have total 21 unbound drives of same size, excluding the vault drives.
So as per the hot spare recommendation we can have 1 hot spare for 30 drives
As per the existing configuration RAID 5(4+1), if I distribute 10 drives on each pool then will be left only with 1 unbound drive(hot spare)
Please suggest what can be done?
