VNX5300 - eMLC SSD not available?
Hi,
I contacted my reseller about expanding our VNX5300 with a new 2,5" DAE and eMLC flash drives. Our reseller says that we can't use that with our generation of VNX (1. gen), and that those drives are only supported with VNX2.
Could someone explain to me why, from a technical standpoint, these flash drives are not supported? How can our system support SLC flash, but not eMLC?
Buying storage from EMC is supposed to give you investment protection. I'm not so sure about that part anymore.

It's pretty easy to summarize. EMC purposely left the VNX 1 in the dust when it came to all the upgrades that the VNX 2 allows. Apparently even though vendors like Netapp and Equallogic allow major code upgrades for 5-6 years on a given hardware platform EMC couldn't figure out how to convert the code on a VNX over to MCx. And... why should they, that forces their customers to buy a brand new VNX 2 array just to get software features.
There are some limitations on the original VNX (mainly memory capacity), I think the VNX memory capacity is really low. Our VNX 5300's only have like 1GB of cache to play with, the rest is used up in software features.
