VNX Data At Rest Encryption Duration

Hi all,

Does anyone have any reference point or estimate of how long the background encryption process might take once we activate the D@RE feature on a VNX5400 with 155TB data?

So far, we have a reference from EMEA that took 7-8 months to complete encrypting 80TB of data.

We hope to have more references or feedback.

Thanks.

VNX Details:

  • VNX5400 running OE 5.33.009.5.231
  • 2 pools - 1251 GB and 152,755 GB consumed.
  • FAST Cache = R1 2x200GB SSD
  • The larger pool consists of
    • 2 x R5(8+1) of 800 GB SSD
    • 5 x R5(8+1) of 1200 GB SAS 10K
    • 8 x R6(6+2) of 4 TB NL-SAS 7.2K

Hello leongk,

It is hard to calculate the time it will take to encrypt the data, as it is lower on the priority list than in coming data.  Most I/O is used for incoming data & reads for data.  This is why when deploying it is best to do so with no data on the system so that all data will be written to the system will be encrypted.
