trouble with a old vnx5100 system

Hi all

I have a trouble with a old vnx5100 system , have multiple failed disks , but i wont able to replace it .

Have multiple pools and raid groups but :

  • have 3 disk enclosure
  • have a pool id 4  , raid 1/0   , 2 disks( disk 1/10, disk 1/11) With 1 fault disk (disk 1/11)
  • have a Raid pool id 2,  raid5 , 6 disks (disk0/0, disk 0/1 ,disk 0/2, disk 0/3 ,disk 1/3 , disk 1/4) with 3 failed disk (disk0/0, disk 0/3 , disk 1/3)
  • i have 5 hot spare (only 2 are active ) hot spare 1 replace disk 0/0 , host pare 2 replace 1/11

note:   raid pool 2 have  disk in enclosure 1 (disk 0, disk 1, disk 3 , disk 4 ) that form part of the  S.O .

So i tried to use USM to refplace faulted disk but the tool says that i cant because i have more than 1 failed disk in the raid(i  understand this because of the raid 5) .So what i need to do to replace los disk ?

Thanks in advance

Hello Vianluigi,

With 3 drives failed in a raid 5 configuration in most cases your data is gone. What I would recommend is that you contact a data recovery company to assist you and see if they can recover your data. If the data doesn’t need to be recovered then, I would replace the drive that failed last first to see if it can rebuild itself. If that is successful then I would replace the drive that failed before the last drive and let it rebuild. Typically when I have seen customers in this state if they have the data backed up it is best to kill the and then remake the raid array. As for your raid 1/0 you should be able to replace the drive that failed and then let it rebuild and that should come back online.

@DELL-Sam L  hi thanks for the response. The data is gone , but is not a crtical data . My question is whether I can replace them even though the assistant tells me not to. Replacing disks 0/0 - 0/3 marked as "do not remove" could cause irreversible damage to the equipment and interrupt the service.

@DELL-Sam L

Is it possible to delete this RAID group ?, even though the disks it comprises are the first assigned (0/0-0-4), without damaging the computer's operating system.Maybe if a delete the raid group , the usm let me change the disk

Hello Vianluigi,

On drives 0/0 – 0/4 have the VNX OS loaded on them, which is why there is a sticker over them stating not to remove them. You can remove them, but you will need to reimage your VNX so that it will see the larger drives that you are wanting to use. You can delete the raid group and that will not effect the vnx os.

Hi pall

So I could safely delete that raid group(regardless of whether disks 0/0-0/4 are in that radius)
and then try replacing the damaged disks? Or will I inevitably have to reimage when replacing the damaged disks 0/0-0/3?

Hello Vianluigi,

Does your vnx boot currently to the os that is loaded on it?  If it does then you can remove the raid groups that are on the system, and you will not affect the vnx os.  One thing that you need to be aware of is that you can’t replace drives 0/0 – 0/4 all at the same time or you will need to reload the vnx os.  It is best to replace those drives one at a time and let the rebuild complete before replacing the next drive.

you cannot delete the LUN or pool or RAID group wih offline state.  The best solution is reinitialize the storage to factory state.
