Switchover a file system without the data mover?
(Fair warning: I'm by no means a expert with the VNX. Feel free to call out anywhere I'm wrong.)
We have a pair of VNXs, one in each data center. We've set up replication for two file systems of ours in the past, but for these file systems they had dedicated virtual data movers (VDM1 and VDM2). As such we have four replication jobs going:
- FileSystem1
- VDM1
- FileSystem 2
- VDM2
During a switchover event, its a simple matter of doing the VDM first, then the file system, and all is well.
The problem is that we also have quite a few file systems that are using the default "server_2" data mover, one of which I want to replicate and switch over. As I understand things, the data mover contains all of the information regarding the CIFS server and shares. As such, I cannot switch over the server_2 data mover, as that would impact all the other file systems on the originating VNX.
Is it possible to just replicate and switchover a file system without its data mover? If this is possible, obviously this would mean that after such a switchover we'd need to somehow recreate / re-associate a CIFS server, the shares, etc.
If this is not possible, is there some other way I should approach this problem?

sure you can but you loose your NFS and CIFS config - like shares, CIFS server, ... and need to recreate them on the dst PDM
Better option would be to move the file systems to a VDM on the src and then replicate both
There is a procedure in the knowledgebase to do move a CIFS server from PDM to VDM which keeps CIFS shares, localgroups, ...
the NFS shares you can simply recreate

I like this idea. I didn't realize that moving a CIFS server from the physical data mover to a VDM could be a relatively simple process.
Is KB 000306562 - "How to move a CIFS server from a physical Data Mover to a Virtual Data Mover (VDM)" the article you were referencing? If so, is there an easy way to know if a server is a "compname"?

I think server_cifs output should tell you
If not I would suggest to open a service request
