Sanitize EMC drives

Hi all,

I have some VPLEX, VNX systems and KTN-STL3 shelves we want to reuse sanitizing firstly drives. We sanitize common drives with Killdisk software under NIST800-88 regulation but I have seen we have to take care with EMC drives wich firmware could be cleared on this process and have to be reflashed to work properly with EMC systems.

Please I would need to know how we can sanitize EMC drives without losing EMC firmware or if there is a way to reflash them.

Thank you in advance.

Hello jtejada.ralco,

The best way to preserve the firmware on the drives is to reinitialize the drives in the system that they came in.  If you are really needing to sanitize the drives first, then reuse them in a EMC system then you would need to have a support contract on your systems so that we can go through the data eraser process.  If you do the data erasure you will need to purchase new vault drives as once they are wiped you can only get them reimiaged from EMC with a active support contract.

Hi Sam,

Thank you for your answer.

Some of these KTN-STL3 shelves were connected to a DD990 where Windows Server was installed and I see the drives formatted to 512 bytes sector size so I think Dell firmware was cleared up. So, if we want to reuse these drives again with a EMC system we have to reimage them? Is that reimage process a service we could request (Purchase) without a support contract?

Hello jtejada.ralco,

If you wipe an EMC drive and it removes the EMC base firmware on the drive, then you will need to reimage the drive with EMC firmware in order to get them seen by the EMC system.  Reimaging can be done if system is still under a support contract.  If not under a support contract then you will need to purchase the drives from EMC & then we will reimage them prior to shipping them out to you.
