Replacing Failed Drive on OS Array
I've attempted to search but perhaps not knowing the proper terms is limiting my hits.
I've got a failed HDD in my OS array on my VNX5100. It already states the HDD is 'Removed' so options are 'Copy to Hot Spare' or 'Replace Disk'. I also see there is a Service Task to Replace Faulted Disk that prompted me to down load the Unisphere Service Manager.
I've got a replacement HDD ready but what is the proper way to go about replacing a drive in the OS array?
Is it acceptable to simply use the Replace Disk option and insert the new drive? I thought it would automatically rebuild but if that is the case why am I prompted to Copy to Hot Spare? And if I selected Copy to Hot Spare would it rebuild the data on the Hot Spare and I would then have to manually copy the contents of the Hot Spare to the newly replaced drive?
Thanks

Somewhat answered my underlying question regarding the proper way to replace the drive by noticing the "More Like This" topics to the right of my original post: https://community.emc.com/message/945571#945571
But it would be good to know what the other options are there for and best practices for applying those.

The reference to the other thread is the best practice. If you installed the Unisphere Service Manager tool then log in to you array and go to Hardware, then select Hardware Replacement and then Replace Faulted Disk - this should step you through the process of replacing the disk.
