removing FC modules from SP

I have a need to pull one 4port 8GBit FC module from each SP on a VNX5400.   At first, it appeared to be a simple task.  now I'm getting told horror stories by FSS that removing an FC module from an SP will cause the SP to not boot up.

The high level plan was to power down the SP

remove teh FC module from slot4 (slots are populated from 0-4), so removing the last one in the list.

power on the SP

wait for SP to boot & I/O to stabilize

Then repeat on the other SP

Does anyone have insight into whether this will work? Or if it screws the configuration on the SP?

You cannot remove IO modules from an SP.  There are certain IO modules that can be upgrades (like 8Gb to 16 Gb FC), but simply removing them will cause the SP to reboot and then boot into a degraded mode.

Once an IO module is installed, either at the factory or added later on, this port configuration is persisted and cannot be removed.

you cannot remove a IO module that is persisted without re-image

Thanks for the Replies.

I have another VNX5400 with all iscsi ports. I was wanting to balance out the I/O modules between the two.  The VNX with the FC modules is active/in use. The one with the iSCSI modules was just relocated (by EMC), so its not in service yet.

As a test on the relocated VNX5400:

Powered down SP A via naviseccli

Pulled the iSCSI i/o module from Slot A4.

Powered on SP A via cli to SP B

After 30 or so minutes the SP A was showing as healthy again in Unisphere.

*** So the SP powered on & booted just fine with the missing module.

Slot A4 is now showing module missing & a Fault.

Rebooted SP B

SP B rebooted just fine.

So in one test, with a VNX not in service, I cannot get the SP's to fail to boot/reboot.  But the module definitely shows missing.

Thanks for the input. Guess i'll go work my account team on options
