New ESX host initiators do not join the hosts storage group?
Hello everyone,
I am working on migrating some ESX clusters connected to a VNX5700 (Unified), to a new VSAN on our Cisco switches.
So, when I move the ESX paths to a new VSAN they automatically pop up and auto register in the VNX. That is all fine and dandy, but the problem is that they join the "~management" storage group, instead of the storage group that the host is in.
So for clarification, lets say we have host esx_host_01p that is joined to storage group named esx_host_01p_sg. When I move the path to a new VSAN, we get a new initiator, and that initiator auto registers with the same host (esx_host_01p), but it does not join the storage group (esx_host_01p_sg), instead it appears in ~management.
Our current solution to fix this is to put the ESX host into maintenance mode, remove the host from the storage group, apply the change, then rejoin the host to the storage group and reboot the ESX host. Then the new initiator works as expected.
Is there any way to get these new initiators to be recognized by the host/storage group, without having to reboot the ESX host and remove/rejoin the host to the SG?
Any help would be appreciated.

you can also get into engineering mode, go to storage group properties, Hosts , Advanced and put a check mark next to the new path.

We are changing VNX ports. We are moving the host zoning from VNX ports A0 and B4 in vsan 123, to ports A3 and B7 in vsan 456.
I have been looking around, and think I may have found a solution in the first post of this thread: Hosts connecting to ~management Storage Group
I am waiting to try it on a host here soon.

if the zoning on the new VSAN is the same, meaning you are not changing host initiator to VNX port configuration ...it should not show up as brand new registration.

Try this:
In Unisphere, open the Host List from the Hosts tab.
Select a host, and then in the Details panel select the Initiators tab.
Select a path showing ~management and hit the Connect button.

Zaphod, your solution worked the first time I tried it, but then it didn't seem to work after that. I'm not sure why.
Dynamox, your solution worked very well. We successfully moved all of the servers and avoided any reboots. The whole process was a lot smoother.
Thank you both for the help!

I'll also offer the, admittedly fairly obvious, advice that your hosts will show the original paths as registered/not logged in and you should de-register those paths to eliminate that condition.

Seven years late reply, still posting it as it might be helpful to someone. Please search for storagegroup -setpath in the pdf - https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-us/products/storage/technical-support/docu47580.pdf
