Is it necessary to replace faulted hard disks in VNX2?

Is it necessary to replace faulted hard disks in VNX2 if you have only storage pools?

If a hard disk fails in a storage pool, data will be rebuilt on an unbound hard disk and this new hard disk will permanently become part of the pool. So as long as I have available unbound disks, there is no need to replace the faulted disks correct?

EMC Support contract has expired and client needs some time to check\renew the contract.

Shyl,

Things changes with the VNX2 regarding replacements, the VNX2 no longer utilizes hot-spare designations.

Sparing is now utilized from unassigned drives and is considered permanent. There is no equalization upon replacement, so the unassigned drive permanently becomes the replacement. In other words, the user will no longer select specific drives as hot-spares. The MCx code will consider any and every un-configured drive in the array to be an available spare, so you will no longer configure drives in the array to be designated as a “spare” for a failed drive.

Hope this helps.
