And regarding pools:  Yes, you can mix different disks within a pool.  There are guidelines, but the one thing I would point out is that while it is possible to mix different sizes within the same tier, that is not recommended as it may result in an uneven workload between the different disks in that tier.  The disks in a pool will be categorized as Flash, SAS, or NL-SAS, and best practice is to us only one disk type per category. 

Examples of this would include using both 2TB NS-SAS and 4TB NL-SAS in one pool, or using 600GB and 1.2TB disks in one pool.

In both of these cases the pool would function, but once the smaller disks were full, the bigger ones would end up with more data on them, and the tiering algorithms wouldn't be as effective in eliminating hot spots within the tier.

For similar reasons it is best practice not to have different sized RAID groups within a tier.  For instance if you have a pool where the NL-SAS tier is one or more 14+2R6, it is sub-optimal to increase the size of the pool by adding a 6+2R6 group.  Again, it will let you do this, and it will function, but the imbalance may impact performance.
