Celerra NDMP backups restore to VNX?

Hello,

We have a customer with Celerra NS480 being refreshed in the near future with VNX. The backups for the Celerra is done via NDMP to tape through Symantec Netbackup. Can these backups be restored to the VNX in the future?  Any DART compatibility issues?

What version of DART is on the NS480?  What version of VNX File OE on the VNX?

Have a look at the NDMP compatibility matrix for VNX.  There's the following line:

NOTE: We support “backward” compatibility from one version of VNX File to another, e.g. from a VNX File 7.1 system, one can restore a backup done on a VNX File 7.0 system.

If the NS480 is on the latest 6.x DART release, there's a good possibility it can be safely restored to a VNX 7.0 system.  Restoring to 7.1 might be possible, but I would worry that you might be unable to restore to VNX 8.1 systems.

If you haven't done so, I would open a support request with EMC and get qualification for the specific version of Netbackup and versions of DART/VNX File OE that you would be able to restore.

Let us know if that helps!

Karl,

Thanks for your reply.  We don't know the exact versions but looks like the compatibility matrix should guide us for the answer. I'll try to find that doc.
