are the EFDs in a VNX1 all SLC?

I've seen similar posts to this but I'm still looking to verify whether these drives are the same (SLC):

FLV3VS6F-200U

V3VS6F-200

V4VS6F-200

We have a VNX5300 which has several part numbers and it is getting reconfigured into new pools and FAST Cache, so I'm trying to validate which ones must be used for Cache or those that can't, but also for the sake of sparing.

Did the older VNX's only have SLCs and the eMLCs not become available until the VNX2's came out?

I can see the following TLA parts in a VNX5300:

5050364EFD (originally purchased as FLV3VS6F-200U but also some came in under sku V3VS6F-200 if appears)

5049185 (appear to have been purchased as V4VS6F-200??)

The drives with the EFD at the end of the part number show up as SAS Flash but are those fundamentally different than SATA Flash?

I looked at that drive compatibility guide that was referenced in another post for VNX5100 and VNX5300's but don't see the difference.

I guess what is puzzling me is if the drives are the same why were they SKU'd differently for (and priced differently)?

thanks all!

Yes – if there is no VP in the name then it can be used for either Fast Cache or Fast VP

This is true for VNX1 – on VNX2 the naming of the drives in UniSphere just changed with the latest VNX OE

There are other internal reasons besides price for different SKU’s

If you look at the same matrix for VNX2 – it does differentiate between VP drives and drives that can be used for both

V4V seem to be VNX2 drives – or at least ordered as VNX2 drives

The software doesn’t use SKU’s – it uses part numbers and drive types

I think they are all SLC – I don’t think eMLC were supported before VNX2

See https://support.emc.com/docu31714_VNX5100-and-VNX5300-Storage-Systems-Disk-and-OE-Matrix.pdf?language=en_US

I would suggest to check what UniSphere / navicli is reporting in terms of disk type – if it has VP in the name its MLC (on VNX1)

There are internal reasons for having different SKU’s for the same drive or a drive of the same type and size – for example different pricing/warranty for different models

If you look at the description of the disk there are two different disks - one is used only on the VNX1 and is configured for use in the 15-slot DAE, the other is only for use on the VNX2

---------------------------------------

FLV3VS6F-200U 200GB 15 Slot DAE - VNX1

not supported on VNX2 - Standard EFD

(enterprise flash drive) SAS interface

disk modules. These are SLC

V3VS6F-200**

(N3VS6F-200)

FLV3VS6F-200**

15-disk

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This disks is only for the VNX2 and is configured for the 15-slot DAE

V4VS6F-200  200GB 15 Slot DAE for VNX2

may be used for FAST Cache or FAST VP

These are SLC

V4VS6F-200**

FLV4VS6F-200

15-disk

---------------------------------------

That was the doc I was referencing but it didn’t seem to answer what I was looking for.

I don’t get how if the SSDs are all SLC why would the cost per drive be different? And is it safe to assume if they don’t have the VP in the name that all are “equal” and could be used for cache or VP?

thanks

Ok thanks.

I think what I don’t quite understand is why then the cost of a drive with the prefix “FL-blah-200” somehow costs more to the customer than the equivalent (and now confirmed same) drive called V3-blah-200.

Thanks guys

Yeah, I see in our VNX2's the "VP" as part of some of the  drive type, and nothing for the ones used for cache - that is good to know. All SSDs in the VNX1 are either SATA or SAS flash. Can either spare for either as long as they are the same size?

thanks
