Add new H.D.D to VNXe 1600 Raid 4+1 and Expand it

Hi, I have an EMC VNXe 1600 Storage with bellow details:

-Software Version: 3.1.3.8767178

- 10 Disks 600 GB 10K RPM Raid 5 (4+1)

- 1 LUN with 3.6 TB Space

- Total Space : 4.1 TB and Available Space: 463

We are facing with lack of space and we want to add an another hard disk through hotplug. how should we do it? i attached an hard disk when it was working without shouting down, then i went to details to expand it, it didn't any  hard to expand. what should i check? actually is it possible do that with any side effect? because all important data are on it and people are working on it.

I would very appreciated if someone can advise me.

Thank you in advance,

Best Regards,

Hello javiiiidddd,

The drive that you added is it the same type, size, and capacity as the drives that are in your VNXe1600?

Here are the steps to add a drive to your existing pool.

  1. Click Storage > Storage Configuration > Storage Pools.

  1. Select a storage pool, and click Expand.

  1. In the Select Storage step, select the storage tiers for the disks you want to add. If your system is not licensed for FAST VP, you can only add disks to the existing tier.

NOTE: Only disks of the same: type, size, and capacity may be used to expand an existing tier

  1. Optionally, change the RAID characteristics of each selected tier. If you are adding a new tier to the storage pool, you can select a different RAID configuration for the disks in the tier. If you are adding disks to an existing tier, you can change the stripe width, but not the RAID type of the new disks. For each tier you want to change:

a.

Click the Change link next to the tier name.

b.

Select the new RAID type (if applicable), stripe width, or both, and click OK.

  1. When the RAID configurations are configured as you like, click Next.

  1. In the Select Amount of Storage step, select the number and type of disks to add, and click Next.

  1. Verify the information shown on the Summary page, and click Finish to expand the pool.

When you are expanding a raid it is best to take a backup before hand just in case any issue come up.  You should be good & have no errors while doing the raid expansion.
