vSphere and View 5.0 with VPLEX Metro and Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS

Our Italian TC team is designing the new "Always On" Vmware View Architecture highly available between two Data Center Active-Active. They what to use all the functionalities of vSphere and View 5.0 that require the Persona Management on a Share CIFS.

The solution will use VPLEX Metro (between two site 25km far) for the gold images. They want to enable also the highly available CIFS for Persona Management and User Profile Data with VPLEX eliminating latency in file response times while supporting collaboration across locations. TheyI need help to understand if it is possible to address this requirement using VPLEX Metro and Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS to enable two clustered Windows 2008 to share the Volume as CIFS (two enabled share active-active one for each site with the same data)?

If this is possible can  the Profile data and Persona Management data be available on both site with the same data?  I attached a 2010 whitepaper on VPLEX Metro and Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS but, VMware and View 5.0 are not included.

Thank you

Nick

Are you going to run VMware over VPLEX Metro and Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS as the way of running Hyper-V over VPLEX Metro and Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS discussed on this whitepaper?

VMware VMDK is running over VMFS, which is a cluster filesystem with multi-layer lockers, therefore I do not think VMware over Sanbolic, which is also a cluster filesystem with multi-layer lockers, is supported.

From my perspective, VMware and CIFS/ Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS running over VPLEX Metro is good, if we look at them as two separated systems. VMs are running over VMware, CIFS shares are managed with Win2k8 server and Melio Cluster FS attached with LUNs.

Thoughts?

I cannot see any reason why this wouldn't be achievable. If you can run Windows 2008 Hyper-V on top of Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS then running CIFS through Windows 2008 on Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS should in theory be very easy to do.

If you were to look at this solution in a single datacentre there would be no reason why it wouldn't work.  LUN presented to Windows 2008 servers and formatted with Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS and utilised as CIFS share. If you just treat the vPlex presented distributed volume in the same way as that standard LUN and present it to two servers in different sites and deploy Sanbolic Melio Cluster FS on it then I'm sure this would work.

Seems to be a sensible design decision to me,  have actually seen the Melio Cluster FS come up a few times in Citrix Provisioning Server deployments,  where they want multiple PVS servers to access the same CIFS share for base VDI images. A lot of the time customers are looking to load balance VDI over two sites with access to the base images in both sites,  I think this could be an interesting solution to that little problem and will keep it in mind.

Kind Regards
