VMware/Oracle RAC Snapshot Alternatives

I have a two node RAC cluster which I know does not support vmware snapshots.  I need to apply a patch to grid and would really like rollback capability in the event things don't go as planned and I need to iterate.  Is the only work around to put all the vmdks on a single datastore (or multiple) and use an array based snapshot on powered off virtual machines?  Preproduction build.  I appreciate any ideas.  Really debating the need for RAC in my virtualized SMB infrastructure nowadays.  I know I'm not alone.
