SRM with Celerra - NFS Options???

I am wondering if SRM is supported with NFS volumes presented by the Celerra (of course being replicated with Celerra Replicator)?  I see lots of work that has been done with iSCSI from the Celerra (and CLARiiON), but I hesitate to recommend it to a customer:   iSCSI from the Celerra is much more expensive in terms of reserved storage capacity for iSCSI snaps;  and RM isn't necessary for managing the replication sessions with NFS.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric,

Celerra NFS has supported SRM has been available since VMware release SRM 4.1  last year.  You can download the SRA directly from VMware's web site.

EMC also has an SRM Failback module available on Powerlink.  (Home > Support > Software Downloads and Licensing > Downloads A-B > Adapters for Third-Party Applications ).  Failback is a unique feature available from EMC.

Best,

Bruce

Good stuff.  Thanks Bruce.

Bruce,

Can you confirm that the SRM/NFS solution does NOT require Replication Manager?

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,

You do not need RM.  You will need a Celerra Replicator license to manage the underlying replication of the NFS Datastores.

Keep in mind that Celerra Replicator is not "VM Aware" and the data at the recovery site will only be crash consistent.  If you require that the datastores at the recovery site be more than crash consistent, you should consider using RM.

Thanks again.

Is there a Solution Guide that talks to application-consistent vs. crash-consistent in the context of NFS replications, SRM, and Replication Manager?  I'm just a little confused on what is, and is not possible these days.

The only way that I know of that RM could be used to take app-consistent snaps is via iSCSI snaps and iSCSI replications via Celerra Replicator.  But I may be wrong (or just outdated).  Not sure how to get app-consistent snaps if the (say) exchange database is sitting inside of a datastore on a replicated NFS volume.
