round robin mru

i created a new lun on a cx4-960. In vcenter it defaults to using mru as a multipath policy which shows 4 active path but 1 active path has I/O.

then i changed the policy to round robin and now it has 4 active paths and all 4 active paths shows I/O.

is this the prefereed config over mru if I dont have powerpath?

EMC's recommendation would be install PowerPath/VE and set the mode to CLAROpt (CLARiiON Optimized) for your environment. You can refer to below Best Practices. http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h6340-powerpath-ve-for-vmware-vsphere-wp.pdf

It depends on the FailoverMode you are using for the ESX initiators on the CX4.

If you are using FailoverMode 1, EMC recommends the MRU policy

If you are using FailoverMode 4 (ALUA) then , EMC recommends the RR policy.

while recommended not required.

you don't have to use PowerPath, we use native multipathing, failover mode on Clariion is set to 4 and policy on ESX is set to Round Robin.

yes, it should use all available paths, enabling the distribution of load across the configured paths. For example if you have one LUN assigned to SPA and your host is zoned this zoning:

HBA 1 - SPA/SPB

HBA2 - SPA/SPB

then you will have 2 active paths, each one utilizing both HBAs.

would tresspassing the lun cause any issues? getting mixed messages about active/passive should not be on rr. only on mru or fixed
