RecoverPoint and SRM
I have a problem with a solution that I am currently working on and I would like expert opinions before proceeding
The solution is as follows;
The customer has an existing DMX connected through a couple of DS4100B switches to a number of Blade servers and other physical servers.
They are in the process of migrating most of the physical servers to ESX 4 running on multiple blades. So far they have migrated 20TB worth of data to VMware datastores (vmdk).
They have purchased an NS480 which will eventually be at the DR site, along with four RecoverPoint Appliances (two for each site)
The goal of the project is to use RecoverPoint to replicate from the production site to the DR site and implement SRM.
The problem is, the guys from EMC that put this solution together did not sell them a Fabric splitter as they thought it was too expensive and complex (their words).
Instead they had intended we use the host based splitters on the production side and the Clariion splitters on the DR side.
It is my understanding that when using the host based splitter with a virtual machine, only Windows platforms are supported and only the virtual machine data can be replicated and must be attached as a RDM/P volume, the boot volumes cannot be replicated.
With this limitation, they cannot use VMotion, HA, DRS or SRM.
Since using the host based splitter stops them from using SRM, it basically makes the whole project pointless.
Furthermore, since they have already migrated 20TB to vmdk storage we would have to migrate back to RDM/P before we could use RecoverPoint.
The question I have for you is; Do you concur with this analysis and do you see any option other than implementing fabric based splitters (AP7600B’s) at the production side.
We are talking about over $100K worth of switches, so I need to make sure before making the expenditure.
