Preferred transport mode for VADP backups

We're preparing to implement VADP backups of our vSphere 5.1 environment and are trying to decide which transport mode to use. We're leaning toward SAN transport but are a little leery about granting a Windows VADP proxy host direct access to the VMFS LUNs. Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences to report with their transport mode selection? Thanks.
