Poor Block Zero Performance with VNX2?

Hello all.  We recently deployed a VNX5400 block with the latest available OE.  We have connected ESX5.1 with Powerpath VE 5.9 installed.  Yesterday I attempted to create six eager zeroed vmdks, sum total about 1.2TB.  I anticipated array offloading and very good performance but instead the creation process took approximately six hours.  I have confirmed that hardware acceleration is enabled for my datastores  where the disks are being created.  I opened a SR in which the technician referred me to the vmware VAAI paper which indicates results may vary by array manufacturer but something doesn't seem right here.
