Data Migration from Clariion CX series to VNX
Dear Expert,
I have a question here and wish that could get my answer from here.
i planning to migrate my data
Source: Clariion CX series
Destination: New storage VNX 5300
Currently Clariion is running with VMware.
I planning to migrate my data in Clariion to New storage VNX.
I have a idea which is connect the new storage VNX to the same FC switch that currently connected to Clariion as well.
Add another Zone on the FC switch for the Server and VNX, create new SG, bind new LUN connect to the server.
From VM i add the new datastore (VNX) and using Vmotion to tranfer.
But i found out that 1 host able to connect to only 1 SG.
Is that able to work by using my idea.
Or is that any other way that i can perform the data migration.
Thank you.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your reply.
Do you mean create new SG with Lun on VNX and connect to the host?
but 1 host able to add into 2 SG?
existing host is already connected to 1 SG on Clariion

You absolutely can do this method, but you'll want to do it like this:
Add VNX to EXISTING zone on the switch.
Create SG on VNX with ESXi's initiators, then present LUNs through the SG to the host.
then perform storage vmotion.

Hi dynamox,
you mean that i join the host to the new SG in VNX?
is that workable by join 2 SG with 1 host.

I think it might possibly slow down the production process but as long the production is still running then i can explain on that to customer.
Thanks man.. Love ya..

i would not add VNX to an existing zone, if SanCopy is installed it will login into Clariion/VNX plus it's going to make it confusing to clean up after the migration.. Create new zones between ESXi and the new VNX. ESXi will automatically register itself in Connectivity Status. Create new storage group, new LUNs ..add hosts and LUN to the storage group. At that point rescan in ESX for new storage and begin storage vmotion.

possibly, you are introducing additional workload of copying data to another datastore ..so you might want to plan accordingly.

Hi dynamox,
mean 1 host can join to 1 SG in Clariion and another SG in VNX at the same time?
host able to connect to 2 storage with 2 different SG at the same time and connection in Clariion wont lost?
just to double confirm with you because the Clariion is actually on production and no downtime allowed by customer.
Thanks for your reply.

you connect host to another array, in this case VNX. You can not have one host in two storage groups in the same array.
