VMAX - Recommendation for the use of front end directors ports.

Hi,

I am new to Vmax storage. I checked the VMAX storage box in my environment and found that all the storage devices are mapped only to port 0 of each FE director, port 1 has no devices mapped at all. As per my understanding both the port should be utilized for the storage provisioning . Can someone tell me why it is done in this way? Is there such recommendations from the EMC for not using the port1? Will it impact the storage system I/O performance? Please refer the below screenshot for more information .

Yes, it's common to only use Port 0 prior to VMAX3. Because of the shared FE director behind each pair of ports there are limits you can run into that can cause trouble. In our early deployments of VMAX we used all the ports and DID run into those problems. Our later deployments dropped the use of Port 1.

VMAX3 changes that paradigm with a new architecture.

on VMAX1 port 0 and port 1 share CPU so some people who have a lot of front-end connectivity go wide (using a single port from each CPU).
