real use of VCM and ACLX devices in DMX 3 and later

Hi All,

From 5771 onwards, the VCM database resides inside the SFS. A management host can communicate with VCM database via normal gatekeeper syscal. But I still see that there will be a dedicated VCM and ACLX device in new code levels. My understand is that these are similar to normal GK device, but has a special attribute enabled to make them as VCM\ACLX device.

So, what is the real use of VCM and ACLX devices even though we can use normal GK for the same purpose ? Is it only for intiliazing the VCM database inside the SFS during initial config ?

Anoop,

the VCM/ACLX device has a special flag that allows it to be seen by hosts even if it's not masked.  It is used for initial configuration.  As you said a regular GK can perform the same functions after initial config.  But it's there to get you started and can also get you out of a jam in a tricky situation.
