Windows update failure ?

Found 2 new updates tonight (Mon, 3-9-15), and I presume they're actually the regular Update Tues updates.

March Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) installed and ran ok but MSE Definitions Update (KB2310138) failed to install twice, both times with error code 80200053.

I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it after a few min it said 2 problems were fixed. When I attempted to install the MSE update again, it said "Update not needed", and now when I check for updates again, it says "Windows is up to date", but the update history list still shows the MSE update as "failed".

MSE showed a green icon on taskbar and seemed to be happy when I open the MSE control panel.

I did some other things on the net and then checked again for updates. The same update was offered again and it failed again for the third time with same error message. NOW WHAT???

Anybody else have problems with this MSE update? I'm using Win 7 Pro+SP1, 32-bit.

I hesitate to suggest this, but maybe this fixit will help:

How do you do a Forced IE11 reset?

Manually downloaded the MSE definitions update from here. When I ran it, there was no visible window but the pointer wheel spun for a while.

When it was done, I tried to get today's Update Tuesday updates, but all I get is error code 8024402F.

Ran the Update Troubleshooter again and it says there's problem with previously installed updates but can't fix it...

Have system restore point which I guess was automatically set before yesterday's mess up so I may try use that to restore and see if I can start over...

Have I said lately how much I HATE Microsoft?  :emotion-39:

Ran system restore with yesterday's restore point.

Said "successful" and I had MSE update itself. Now showing definitions file created 3-10-15 (today).

But when I try to get today's monthly updates, I get the same 8024402F error and no way to get past it.

So I'm stuck in a mess... [:'(]

Had nothing to lose, so...You're a genius...!        ...almost... :emotion-2:

Ran the FixIt and then looked for updates. Response time on the update site is terrible but this time it said 21 available, but only 9 downloaded/installed and 12 failed.

After those 9 finished rebooting the system, I looked for updates again and got another 11. Those installed (took 2 reboots),  but now the last one refuses to install.

KB3032359 - Cumulative Update for IE11 fails repeatedly with error code 80070570.

Got more great suggestions?

Glad that (sort of) worked. I believe the error code 80070570 refers to a corrupted file. More info:

Personally, I always wait a week or 2 before manually installing the monthly updates from the WU site, except for security fixes rated as critical. I generally ignore the Recommended and Optional updates. I figure if MS can wait a month to release this stuff, I can wait a bit longer without any significant additional risk.

This not only avoids the Patch Tuesday rush on the MS servers, it also allows others the joys of discovering the bugs in the patches.

Today, I see 25 Important updates totalling over 260 MB. No way will I download/install them all at once, when I eventually get around to it.

Tonight I find I cannot download the MSRT utility for March separately- only the Feb version is available. (I can get the MSRT tool from WU, but I distrust any scanner/remover that runs silently).
www.microsoft.com/.../malicious-software-removal-tool-details.aspx

When I visit the WU site tonight, hi-lite any update, and click on the "More information" on the right side, I get taken to a page that says
"Oops!
The page you are looking for may have a new location, or is no longer available."

Stuff like this just does not re-inforce my trust in MS.

When I think of all the grief that WU has caused me over the years ( .Net Framework updates spring to mind) I have to wonder about the importance of all these updates. I'm kind of glad that my trusty old XP SP3 system works just fine  freed of these onerous updates, despite the dire warnings of the XPocalypse.

Unfortunately, MacroStupid is getting even more so. I clicked a Privacy Notice link on one of their download pages, and: "OOPS, the page you are looking for...".  So I guess there's no privacy from MS anymore.

Anyway, I wasted all day yesterday and half of last night trying to fix this stupid problem. Thanks to your help, I got the first 20 updates, but that last one for IE11 was a (fill in the blank!). WU gave a seemingly random list of error messages every time...

Ran sfc, mbam & SAS scans, hardware diagnostics, reinstalled Windows Update Agent, tried to install the IE update manually, manually installed KB947821 to fix WU issues, uninstalled ZoneAlarm firewall and activiated Windows firewall, reset Windows Update Service by renaming catroot2 folder...on and on and on and on...rebooting and testing WU after every change.

Finally dug out Win 7 installation DVD and was ready to reinstall but at the last minute I did a forced IE11 reset. And it WORKED!  WU found the IE11 update, plus 4 very old Outlook updates I'd hidden (resetting WU unhid them). The IE11 update downloaded and installed. Woo-hoo!

This morning I ran WU and it found and installed an MSE definitions update, so it's working again - for now...

Lesson learned: Force reset IE first when there are WU issues...

Owe you a or 3...

I also wonder if all these Windows updates are really all that important for the average home user. I have had pretty good luck for past several months, but have learned to wait about a week to download and install them, since problems with them seem to be getting worse and more frequent. I do let the updates for Windows Defender download an install though.

Just encountered the same problem again tonight using WU to look for MSE definitions updates.

Poked around and noticed HomeGroup Provider service (in services.msc) wasn't running. Started the service manually and WU found and installed today's MSE update.

HomeGroup Provider is set to manual start, so now I have to figure out why it didn't start either when I booted the system and/or when I launched WU.

Or maybe just set it to automatic startup and not mess around in the Windows innards. :emotion-7:
