The Firefox "update failed" on my PC running Win 10 v21H1. So now when I try to update via the Help menu, instead of doing it automatically, it directs me to a web page where I can download Firefox as if I don't already have it installed.
Tried clearing the FF cache, cookies, history, etc, but it still directs me to that same web page instead of updating automatically. Does anyone know if installing this way is going to over-write all my current settings, bookmarks etc?

Ron,
To the best of my knowledge, installing a "full" Firefox over an existing FF should retain your customized settings/bookmarks/etc. If I'm not mistaken, it should offer you the option of updating an existing version (or separately, for a "new" installation). But as a formality, I need to mention that you're proceeding at your own risk.

Ron,
I wanted to be sure... so I downloaded the full FF setup. I opted for the default STANDARD (rather than CUSTOM) installation, which checked for my existing FF, and prompted me to UPGRADE it. I did so, and all appears well... bookmarks present, and a quick glance does not reveal any changes in my existing settings.

@ky331 Thanks for checking. Hope you did this on a test box or VM so you wouldn't actually lose anything if it didn't just update, and did a clean install.
Just opened Firefox Help>About to find the link it offered yesterday, and now it says v91.0 is installed and "up to date". So it seems to have sorted out its problems after I booted up today because it said "failed" every time I looked yesterday, even after I restarted Win 10 several times...
Thanks again.

Actually, I tested it on a "live", non-sandboxed system. Edge is my primary (almost exclusively-so) browser, so I wouldn't have panicked had I lost any Firefox information/settings. But I was pretty confident that I was correct, and I felt it prudent that I test things for myself, rather than allow you to be the guinea-pug. (I know I mistyped the last word... the DeLL censor wouldn't allow the proper term )
As an afterthought, I realized you should be able to export your FF bookmarks, saving them as an .html file, so to be able to import them if you need them. I'm sure I've done that in the past. There's also the SYNCH feature, which should save all settings... but I've never tried/explored using it.

So you were the canary...
Suppose I could have exported bookmarks, but didn't think of that. But if things didn't get resolved by themselves, I'd just have waited for the next FF update, which will probably be offered in next few days, given their current rate of fixes and changes...
