Tax prep sites leaking data

Popular tax prep sites such as H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer are secretly sending your data to Meta, parent of Facebook.

These sites have an embedded Meta Pixel that sends sensitive data to Facebook including user name, email address, income data, filing status, refund amount, and dependents’ college scholarship amounts.

The information sent to Facebook can be used by their advertising algorithms and is being gathered even if the person using the tax filing service doesn't have an account on Facebook or on any of the other platforms owned by Meta.

Some of these same tax sites also use Google’s analytics tool and similar financial data, but not names, is being sent to Google through their tool.

This isn’t the first time Meta's Pixel tech has caused privacy breaches. Last month, medical records of ~3 million people were exposed thanks to Meta’s Pixel tracking capabilities.
