MS Patch for April Fools Day Virus

I got an alert from the Dell Support Center yesterday about the impending threat of the April Fools Day virus and was directed to a MS site where I was supposed to download a patch for this virus.  Once I downloaded it and tried to run it, I received a message that the patch was not compatible with my system.  I have an XPS 410 running Windows Vista Home Premium, SP1.  I can't understand why Dell put out this alert for my machine if it wasn't compatible.  Any comments/input will be appreciated.

If your Vista has been kept updated regularly, you are already patched.

I am very new to this whole new world. Can you please explain to me how one would, "regularly update" the computer. I've only had my computer for a little over a year and I think it is infected. Just got off the phone with DELL. I have to call them when I'm home. Who would of thought?? Anywho. Are there certain rules I should know?? Please answer. I am trying my best to learn.

First of all, I am not sure from what you have said if you are familiar with the process so my answer will be basic...sorry if I'm going over familiar ground here. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and then select the Security Center tab. If I remember correctly, it should be set to Automatic by default. If not,  look at the bottom and you can see where it says "Manage Security Settings", or words to that effect. I have mine set to notify me, but not download or install them, I prefer to do that manually. When you have updates a yellow shield will appear the the system tray on the lower right.

Otherwise, go to the Start button and Windows Updates are a choice up the list aways. The computer will search and come up with various updates...Critical, Recommended, and Optional I believe are the choices. It is advisable to always do the Critical,  and ask here about the Recommended and Optional if you are not sure.  Make sure all of your security products are updated regularly...with some of them it is a daily task. Again, if your unsure about particular programs, come to this forum and ask. Good luck...:emotion-5:
