AVG's Update Manager struggling to update
I have a PC running Windows XP Home SP3. DSL connection. AVG Free 8 is my anti-virus software. I've been using AVG for about a year with almost no problems. Until recently.
The past seven days or so, AVG's Update Manager has had trouble updating itself on my computer. Just a small message about an error while attempting to acquire new updates. Has this happened to any other AVG Free users recently?
No problems this morning with AVG Update Manager.

Lawnmowerguy:
The AVG Free forum is flooded with update problems in the last 2 weeks. Apparently it's related to server upgrades for the free version:

Do yourself a big favor and get rid of AVG Free. It isn't that good of a program. Get Avast Home Free. It does a much better job, uses less resources, and updates quicker and easier. You'll be glad you made the change.

Thanks for the responses. I actually used Avast Home Edition for almost two years and was completely happy with it. Worked very smoothly. Then suddenly, I started getting error messages when Avast attempted to update itself. I tried Avast's online forum and about 6 or 7 other online resources for help. None of the suggestions I received solved the problem. I even formatted my hard drive, and reinstalled XP and Avast. Still didn't help. What was frustrating was that no one else appeared to be having the same trouble, unlike my glitch with AVG.
Anyway, I switched to AVG Free and it has worked fine since. Except for these recent update glitches. I assumed it was a glitch on AVG's end.

Having used the free versions of AVG, avast, and AntiVir in the past, I can recall occasions with each when updates were a problem for a day or two due to server maintenance or congestion. It's part of the price you pay when you don't pay. Paid subscribers get faster access to dedicated servers.
Sometimes just switching the time for automatic updates to off hours solves the problem.
I never considered it more than a temporary irritation, or cause enough to upgrade or switch AVs. Then again, I don't think I would tolerate update problems lasting a week or more ...

hi,
i've been using AVG for the last ten years or so ( have also used AVAST on an old Win98 system - didn't like it much ).
You will find that AVG has these niggly types of problems from time to time but, if you stick with it, you will
be more than satisfied with its performance over time.
Good Luck

Running the Avast VART self booting disk on my daughters system and finding over 100 virus, trojans, spyware, and malware (43 of which were actual virus) that AVG 8 Free said was a clean system convinced me that AVG simply isn't good enough. I switched her to Avast and her system now runs the way it should.
As for updates, AVG would have problems with updates every few days while I've only had a problem with Avast once, and that only lasted one day. Add in the numerous false positives that have left systems unbootable by AVG and I learned that AVG just can't be trusted. Avira had, and still has a HUGE problem with updating the free version. It does okay as far as protection goes, but since it was rarely up to date who cares.

Now that I think about it, I remember getting the update error message from Avast every time I rebooted or turned on my PC. This lasted for days and was quite annoying. Frustration over being unable to fix this problem led to my uninstalling Avast and using AVG.

Just some speculation here... I'm doing so NOT to advocate you switch back to avast, but rather, for the sake of others who might encounter the same problem:
Avast can be configured to "tell" it whether your computer is continually hooked up to an ISP [e.g., you're running a cable/DSL modem/router 24/7 , or whether you only go online sporadically [e.g., you're using a dial-up connection].
If you've indicated that you're hooked up continually, but in fact, were using dial-up [or if your modem/router was turned off], avast will attempt to update each time you boot/reboot your PC, and failing to do so [since you're not connected at the time] will generate an update error message.
