~2,000 online stores compromised
~2,000 online stores that use the Magento (an Adobe company) back-end for processing credit card payments got hacked this past weekend, Sept 11 - 14, 2020. The hackers added code to steal credit card details shoppers entered on the store's checkout form.
Those e-stores were using an old, outdated version of Magento that was known to have security issues, but never updated to a newer version which plugged the holes. Unfortunately, at least 95,000 other sites are still using the old version and still susceptible to being hacked.
So far, the list of affected online stores is only available to law enforcement. If you e-shopped this past weekend, keep an eye on your credit card statement. Responsible online stores should be contacting affected customers, so watch for those email alerts.
I shopped at several online sites over the weekend, but I have my credit card set up to notify me via email and text when any new online charges are made. If your card offers that same notification feature, this may be a good time to activate it.
