Foglight Appliance

We have the Foglight VE virtual appliance installed, and it works well communicating to vCenter.  We now are looking to get visibility into our windows servers, such as services and events, but Foglight complains it needs the agent to install it into the machine.  Makes sense.  Dell won't let me download the agent though, as the website says my license doesn't allow it.

So I contact my rep, and they said that since the appliance is Linux based (Suse), it can't look into Windows servers.  If I want that, I need to install the foglight server on a windows box.  He wasn't entirely sure about that, and asked I call support.

I will, but wanted some insight from this crowd first.   Does that seem right to you?  Or am I just acting the newbie and getting some terminology mixed up?

thanks!

Hi Brendon,

Some clarification on the situation that you are encountering. The capability to monitor the processes is actually built into the product so you dont need a seperate license or anything like that, you just have to enable the capability of the host monitoring for the fglam (foglight agent manager). Now, the second part of your question might make a little more sense with a quick explanation. We use Winrm to talk to those windows servers so that's why we need an external windows machine to act as the fglam to monitor those windows machines. The external windows machine doesnt have to be big, 2 cpu's, 4gb of memory and 40gb of disk should do to get you started. If you want to monitor a large number of windows machines you might have to up that but i'm sure that's not a surprise. Your question is a good one, glad you reached out.

Thank you for the response.  I'm glad to see we don't need a separate license, despite that knowing that continues my confusion.  So with the vApp fully up and running, what exactly do I need to install on the windows server?   My guess would've been the Foglight Agent Manger.  Regardless, I don't seem to be able to download anything from the Foglight downloads section due to a lack of support contract, which we do in fact have.  I can download the FVE app just fine.  So, I apologize in that I seem to be missing something very basic here.  I do appreciate greatly any help you are offering.

Hi Windmeyer,

You should be able monitor your Windows host from the embedded (linux) FglAM using WMI. Requirements here

Some people prefers using WinRM because it scales better and seems to be easier to deploy. Regarding installing an agent manager in a Windows host, you would normally download it to the target machine just pointing to the Foglight installation, see the procedure here

I hope that helps,

Gaston.
