Customers with large, petabyte+ footprints are looking to reduce costs by moving to commodity storage, often from multiple vendors. Customers approach this in two ways: They can use existing in-house hardware and repurpose for storage-as-a-service or buy commodity hardware and then provision storage on it. The negative consequence is the lack of standardization on a unified storage SKU that can be used across the industry. This standardization would help drive down cost and ease the certification and adoption process.
ViPR supports commodity hardware. EMC ViPR enables customers to use their commodity hardware and run ViPR Services such as ViPR Object, ViPR Block and ViPR HDFS. Customers benefit from both the low cost of commodity hardware while not compromising enterprise storage capabilities such as geo replication, data snapshots, and more.
