I'm confused by VIPR...

So I'm looking for some help from the product teams here.  this product is described as a storage management virtualization product that effectively helps admins manage heterogeneous storage environments.  All of the documents discuss the idea of managing products that support SMI-S but ultimately, you're supported array list in 1.1 is very small.  i.e. EMC products and NetApp.  what about other products that support SMI-S.  i.e. Compellent?  HDS? etc.

those vendors support SMI-S, but they aren't on your lists.  what do I tell a customer today that owns a bunch of Compellent?

If it works, but it's not on the list, what would they be losing?

Hi Tim,

We are constantly adding new storage support in ViPR. Please stay tuned, we will keep everyone posted.

ViPR is continuously evolving and new features are being added all the time.   In addition to the arrays you mentioned we are going to support HDS in the near future and Cinder support is also something you should look into.  Many vendors support Cinder/Openstack and we can utilize this method to talk to other array types.

Hi Tim,

You can find Openstack/ViPR documentation in several places.

ViPR in GitHub: emcvipr · GitHub . Here you will find installation information for the different ViPR repositories. Openstack Cinder among them.

Blogs:

Rocky,

per my quick google search, Compellent arrays are supported through OpenStack.

http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file/__key/telligent-evolution-components-attachments/13-4491-00-00-20-43-90-57/Dell-Co…

ViPR technically is capable of supporting any 3rd party arrays that can be supported through OS, but implementation from OS side down varies widely based on array manufacturer implementation of OS driver and EMC has no control over peculiarities of such implementations.  Due to huge variety possible behind OS, full testing is clearly not possible - QA tested a few array types, as noted in the ViPR Support Matrix.

To help move things forward, EMC ViPR team has pre-created a OS Cinder VM, with installation instructions here: OpenStack (Icehouse) Installation and Configuration for use with EMC® ViPR®  - this VM is not quite a supported product by EMC - more of a quick base platform to grow into an example, should you need to show your customer the integration in principle. Actual OS implementation will require OS expert level resource that EMC might not have on hand.  You can find a lot of instructions in the comments on configuring the VM from the XIV perspective.

ViPR Development team constantly keeps growing supported array list for native support, based on market demand.

Hope this helps.
