How to Improve or Diagnose Long (APG / Watch4Net / M&R) Report Generation Times

Hello,

I have had a lot of luck using this communities forum so her I go again...

We are using EMC's APG reporting application sometimes also known as Watch4Net or M&R.  Our plan is to provide live dashboard type reports to our customers via this tool.  Currently we have a report configured for each of our customers showing their server events and utilization.  This information is being feed to APG from our SMARTS environment.

Issue:

The issue is that the initial report generation time for these reports can be anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes.  My goal is to reduce this report generation time down to no more than 30 seconds.

I know of the pre generated reports concept but we want to provide our customers with the ability to view utilization and events in "real time".

I also checked the server's CPU and Memory utilization and both never exceed 60% utilization during report generations.

Questions:

Are there any methods to improve report generation times?

Is there any way to identify the root cause of long report generation times?

Thank you so very much,

Stu

Hi Stu,

Each environment is unique and as you have different reports configured for each of your customers you should call support to discuss your specific needs.  However, below are just some pointing areas to consider when working out reports:

  • Use higher aggregates instead of Real-time data, especially if using any Spatial formulas that gather data from more than 1000++ of objects.
  • Determine if a given report requires the whole timeseries or just the last polled value.
  • Limit the scope of metrics selection (filter) on the highest report level, if possible.
  • Consider pre-generation during off-peak hours
  • Using Report FE Generator logs to track slow reports

We hope this helps but speaking with support should be able to address your specific requests.
